In a village, deep underground, there's a pit they say leads to hell. When the rumbling starts, it meant the gods were getting angry and had to be appeased, to do things like... bring a good harvest, a good year, things like that. If they didn't, the Repentance would happen, malice would spread from the pit and infect everyone.
...Eventually, the rituals failed. The malice spread. Ghosts turned twisted and violent, humans either went mad or they killed themselves--those that didn't get killed by the ghost, anyway.
Since then anyone who wanders in is forced to do the ritual over and over in the hopes it'll finally work. [Mio swallows hard and her voice become a whisper]
