2nd Book Read A Accidental Video/Action for Cherrygrove Ω

A big paw is batting at the Gear.]

Yang, stop playing with that.

[The Gear is showing the ceiling of an inn in Cherrygrove. A slender hand comes down on the camera briefly, and then the Gear is set on a table, and it shows Spencer Reid (considerably more calm now than he was on Sunday) walking back to the bed, where a very cranky Absol sits with a Munna egg wrapped in a warm towel next to him.

Also, there's half a library's worth of books piled around the room. No, seriously, if you put them all in one stack, it'd nearly be Reid's height.

Absol makes a irritable grunting noise.]

I know, I know, but we'll go out for some fresh air soon, promise. I just need to get through some more of these.

[He picks up a brick-sized book seemingly at random, sitting down on the bed with his legs crossed before placing the wrapped up egg in his lap. In retrospect, he probably shouldn't have taken one before he knew what he was doing, but he doesn't really trust the textbooks here that much and wants to make observations of development by himself.

Yes, someone has started to consider the possibility that he's not completely insane. Since he might not be insane, he wants to learn about where he is, and he wants to learn everything.

He opens up the book and started fanning through the pages, as if he were trying to find his spot, but he doesn't stop. He turns the pages so fast that he can't possibly be reading them, so it's unclear what he's doing.]

Give me half an hour. We'll go out then. And if you really want to, I guess we can go into the woods and find something for you to fight.

[...No, he still hasn't noticed that Yang turned on the Gear. People who told him this wasn't a prank should feel free to gloat and say they told him so.]

Oh, you did? [Lucky duck.] Did you work in it?

[Reid looks down at Yang, still looking unsure.] I don't know. I mean, there are some things he just can't communicate to me, like what to feed him or how much sleep he should be getting or--

[OH MY GOD.

Yang just starts pawing his knee like a very discontented cat. Reid flinches back, but his movement is limited with the giant pink egg in his lap.]

Yang! Stop that! Your claws are sharp!

I was the librarian, yes. That was more or less the intentional setup, I could do my job and continue with my studies uninterrupted. It was a very convenient living arrangement.

[She's about to point out that those sort of things can be figured out in other ways too, but Yang's interruption cuts her off. She stares for a moment, unsure whether to laugh or wince, and points out mildly;]

I think he's trying to communicate something rather important as we speak.

[Ow ow ow ow Yang why ;.; ]

I said I would! I said I would! I just need another--

Absol! [Cue harder pawing. Jesus Christ, Reid. No wonder you never had any pets.

Reid tries to roll backwards, but Yang's legs are longer than he gave them credit for.] Ow! Stop that! You're scratching me!

[That's the fucking point, genius.]

Ow! I'm sorry, I've never taken care of animals before, okay? Ow! [Stupid egg making it hard for him to scurry away.

Twilight. Help. He has no practical experience.]

[Oh dear. Well, Twilight does have some rather immediate advice, but first she should probably try to convince the Absol to stop attacking its poor trainer.]

Excuse me... Yang, right? Can you give me five minutes, ten at the most, to talk to Spencer? I promise you that's all the time I'll need, so please, ease up on him for the moment, will you?

[If the Absol doesn't listen to her, maybe she should delegate this to Fluttershy...]

[Yang insists he wouldn't have to do this if his trainer wasn't an ingenious idiot.

But luckily, Yang does listen to her. He looks at the communicator, then with a grunt, he withdraws his paws. Reid rubs his knees, scooting back to avoid more pawing in the future.] Why do you listen to her and not to me?

[Yang rests his head on the duvet and gives Reid the most sardonic glare he can manage. Because she's not an idiot, Reid. Because she's not an idiot.

Also, because you really need to train him more before he'll listen without question.]

Alright, thank you, Yang. I promise this won't take long.

[She gives the Absol what she hopes is an understanding smile before returning her attention to Reid.] Alright, so first of all, how long exactly has he been asking you to take him outside? If he feels like you've been putting him off too long, that might explain why he's not feeling inclined to listen.

[She's thinking over how to take care of regular animals, how to take care of Pokemon, and the differences and similarities between the two as she talks. She figures Reid'll probably need as much knowledge as he can get.]

[Reid frowns, running his hand through his hair.] I... don't really know. I don't have a watch to keep track of time with. It can't have been long--I haven't even gotten through half of these books yet.

[Reid is a genius, but he's a genius with theory. Practically, he's awkward and clumsy and totally oblivious, so yeah, Twilight may need to spell some stuff out.]

First of all, you have to keep in mind that you and he may have different definitions of "long", particularly as he doesn't have any way to pass the time while you're reading. What could feel like barely any time for you could be an agonizingly long period for him, particularly as his instincts are basically screaming at him to get outside and train.

Which is something else I should mention. Most Pokemon, not all, but most, are very, very eager to fight, train, and get stronger. Which makes sense if you think about it, after all it makes it easier for them to protect their trainers and help them achieve their goals. If they're prevented from doing so, they get... antsy.

[She glances at Yang. Yeah, self-evident demonstration there.]

[Reid cocks his head, his brow furrowing a little as he thinks about that. Yang lets out a soft grunt when Twilight mentions 'protecting trainers'--that's honestly his main concern, since when he's around Reid, he can feel the potential disaster brewing. People can and will do his trainer harm, and while Yang may not know Reid too well yet, he bristles at the thought of his trainer being attacked and him being able to do nothing to stop it.

Reid then glances down at Yang.] I would have thought that all the fighting he did on the way here would have been enough, but I guess not. Exactly how much fighting do you think he needs to stay healthy and happy?

Well, it's less about the fighting itself, especially in the beginning, and more about how much stronger it's made him. A good measurement of if he's gotten enough is if he's managed to learn any new moves so far. His starting array of attacks isn't very well-rounded or powerful, and he's going to be very eager to learn new, more useful abilities.

Of course, there's also the type of Pokemon to consider. Absol are said to be able to predict disasters... he may want to get stronger quickly because he senses something approaching.

I haven't seen Yang demonstrating any kind of new attacks. I... guess he hasn't been getting enough battles. [...And now he feels a little guilty. Whoops. He's a bad trainer. He'll make it up to you, Yang. ;.;

Hey, wait, back up--] Predicting disaster? [That doesn't sound ominous at all. Reid glances down at Yang, grimacing. Normally, he'd be skeptical, but after the last week, this seems like a very mundane thing to be skeptical of.] Is that what you're worried about?

[Yang gives him a hard stare, then shrugs his shoulders as best he can. It's not a concrete prediction, per se. He cannot say when and where it will happen like he usually can. He just knows that Reid is carrying an aura that invites evil and harm, and Yang has been around long enough to know that those auras attract disaster.

People will try to hurt his trainer. Yang isn't going to sit by and let that happen.]

[Of course, this whole exchange between trainer and Pokemon just confounds Twilight, who doesn't have any idea what Reid means by "that", and isn't really sure what that approximation of a shrug is supposed to mean either. She glances back and forth between the two of them for a bit, just trying to think of what she should say here.]

Um... so anyway, what you should try to keep in mind is that Pokemon aren't just pets, or regular animals at all, even though they have a lot of the same characteristics. A real Pokemon and Trainer connection is one of trust and friendship, a lot closer to equals than any ordinary master and pet one.

Yang... Whether or not he's actually sensing danger, he knows as well as anyone who's spent time in Johto that this place is dangerous, and doubly so for a newcomer. And you're his trainer. He cares about you, and wants to protect you. But right now he doesn't think he can do that. It's up to you to make sure he gets the chance to grow and strengthen into the kind of Pokemon he wants to be, the kind that can take care of you while you're in this kind of world.

[She's not quite sure how accurate her speaking for Yang is, but having spent as much time in Johto and around Pokemon in general as she has by now, she's willing to bet that it's pretty close.]

[Well, by 'that', Reid just means disaster in general. It seems to follow him around.

Reid turns his attention back to Twilight, though he seems a little concerned now. He's really hoping his terrible luck hasn't followed him here, but it probably has and he'll probably end up getting attacked by a serial killer or something. That just seems to be a constant in life.

Yang turns to look at Twilight and nods. Yeah, she's close enough.]

Well... You know, normally, I'd say that I could take care of myself, but this place sort of took my gun away... [Which is a problem. Reid looks back at Yang, frowning. He doesn't really like the idea of depending on another creature for protection, to be honest, but what else can he do in this case? He doesn't have a gun, and he has no legal means of getting one.] Twilight, are all Pokemon as intelligent as Yang is? I don't know about your world, but in mine, animals can take weeks to learn how to follow basic commands, and that's after domesticating them over generations.
