7th Lecture Babbled Ε Accidental Video/Action for Violet Υ Backdated to Tuesday

[Well, sort of accidental. Reid doesn't know about it, but Missy totally turned it on on purpose.

At first, all there is is smoke, and the sound of coughing.

And then there's light, and for those who are familiar with it, Violet from outside the Violet Gym. Missy felt the need to televise this because LOOK LOOK HER TRAINER GOT HIS FIRST BADGE EVERYBODY! 8D

While Missy is chattering about how awesome the battle was and how proud she is of Reid and how she wants to ride a bird now and on and on, Yang looks ready to collapse, Reid is cradling Elle in his arms because she's already collapsed, and Reid is doubled over in a horrible hacking coughing fit. Missy flies circles around him with his Munna (who is being ridden by a Litwick) and a Yamask, and after about a minute of straight coughing, the Yamask starts to grumble and floats right at Reid, pressing one appendage to his back, another at his throat, and forcefully straightening him while massaging the esophagus.

The coughs stop immediately, and Reid gets rigid at the unexpected contact. After a couple more moments, the Yamask releases him and floats back into the ring of undamaged flying Pokemon, grumbling about how he should just be like everyone else and go into a gym with massively over-leveled Pokemon next time.]

Uh, thank you, Amanda. You see, guys, this is why I teach you about physics. He was more experienced than me and had stronger animals, but taking advantage of thermodynamics--

[Elle paws him in the chest. Less lecturing, more going to the Center.]

Oh, right, sorry. [He starts approaching the Center, and his new badge gleams on his shirt.] While the nurse is looking at you both, I'll get something to thank you.

[And he is still blissfully unaware of Missy broadcasting the whole thing.]

[Reid is not as good at this as Carmen. Because she's awesome at everything and he's just smart with everything.] That was Elle for me. My Vulpix. I found her with a twisted paw--I didn't even intend to keep her, but after I had caught her and brought her to a Center, she refused to leave. Similar story with Amanda. [Only with less twisted paws and more possessions and sad teenagers who didn't know where else to go.]

My Slugma followed me around the Burned Tower for the better part of an hour before I finally caught him just to save him the trouble. And I've recently adopted another in a similar way — we were leaving, and he seems to have decided he didn't want to be left behind.

[But it does warm her heart, this talk of helping wounded Pokemon, so +10 to Reid on that one in her esteem, oh yes.

But hang on, now, she's doing a quick mental tally.]

Amanda is the girl that possessed you? You kept her?

[To Reid, it was the natural thing to do. Poor girl would have died without a little medical care, and Reid is nothing if not compassionate.]

Yeah. Amanda's my Yamask. I didn't intend to keep her, but she didn't want to leave. She said that she's making up for running amok in my body. [And Reid doesn't insist on her leaving because he knows she has no where else to go, and really, she's just a kid. That aforementioned compassion dictates that he not throw the sad dead kid in the cold. And her reminding him of Amanda and Adam and therefore Tobias Hankel might have something to do with that but shush.] There's friction between here and the rest of my roster, but it's getting better.

That's only to be expected. Though she does sound reasonable enough, if she's that conscious of the complications she caused you and determined to make up for them.

[But admittedly, she's sort of glad the one that ended up possessing her didn't stick around as a part of her roster, but went on to whatever destiny awaited him. She wouldn't have minded having him around, exactly, but it would've been utterly weird, and she doesn't particularly envy Reid's position in keeping his.]

Speaking of noteworthy ghosts, I have one that might interest you.

She's actually quite reasonable. More than people give her credit for, really. It just sometimes gets lost under an abrasive demeanor, but teenagers tend to outgrow that.

[There's a little noise in the background of the Yamask protesting, but Reid ignores it because lol he can't speak Pokemon.

But hey, noteworthy ghost, Reid's perking up.] Oh really? How so?

[She sounds so coy, at that. But of course, she remembers what she was like as a teenager, too.]

It's a Gastly — a Haunter now, but a Gastly when I caught it. And my guess is it's some kind of mutant strain of the species, because its coloration is wrong.

It's possible it's a 'shiny'. I met someone who had a Musharna with uncommon coloration, and apparently it's perfectly healthy and has no difference beyond the color, but there isn't much documented information about them. Could you give me an image of it?

[By now, he's realized that she doesn't like video, which he totally gets because he doesn't like it either. Yet it would be easier to tell if the Haunter is a shiny or something else if he could actually get a look at it.]

Fascinating. What color was it when it was a Ghastly?

Blue. Or rather, the nucleus was the same, but the halo was blue — which is what drew me to her in the first place.

For the sake of comparison, this is my other Haunter, Indy.

It looks like the color difference is more subtle in the Haunter than it was in the Musharna I saw, but the fact that the color was different as a Ghastly as well supports the shiny theory. Have you ever seen unusually colored animals before?

I once adopted a pair of white lions.

For what it's worth, I haven't noticed any particular differences between Isabelle and Indy in terms of power or development — although Isabelle certainly has a much less pleasant demeanor.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that the only officially documented difference between shinies and regular animals is the color. How is Isabelle's behavior different from Indy's?

For about fifteen minutes. We were intercepted on the way to the private game preserve I'd built for them.

[She stole an entire beach from the shores of Hawaii for their litter box, okay. Theirs would have been a good life.]

She's crueler, for one thing. Also more direct. Indy is a prankster, but foil one of his plans and he'll try to improve on it for the next time. Isabelle tends to have just one method of inducing fear that hasn't failed her yet — jumping straight at someone's face and aiming for a cheap scare.

Considering her company, I'm sure she'll get more clever with time. [And that's not even meant to flatter; he's stating a fact here.]

Mm. With Indy, I've never had reason to doubt that his pranks were always just for the sake of a laugh. Which made him something of an oddity, I think; his mother and sire were apparently fairly unpleasant, themselves. With Isabelle, I'm not always as sure. She's more malicious. And if it weren't for the fact that most everyone I let her deal with outweighs her in experience and power alike, I imagine she'd be quite the bully of the group.

[Well, Reid likes stating facts, so hang out with him and you'll have a lot to preen about.]

As I understand it, that's relatively common behavior for a Haunter. Being the weakest of the group, she'll probably be forced to reign herself in eventually when someone decides she's gone too far. But if that's common, then I doubt that whatever mutant gene changed her color is the cause of her unpleasant disposition.

She'll be forced to rein herself in when I get through with her, too. There's a right way and a wrong way to do things, and I don't hold places on my team for the ones who insist on doing it the wrong way.

In that case, she'll probably figure things out. [He doesn't think angry!Carmen would be fun to deal with.] Keep me updated on it. I'd be interested to hear how her behavior develops.

You're just finding the ghosts particularly fascinating, aren't you? You said you were planning to try for one of every type, but I count three ghost-types and only one of each of the others.

Well, I didn't intend to keep Amanda. [But yeah, you got a point, and yeah, he feels comfortable enough to give a straight answer.]

I do have to admit that I find Ghost- and Psychic-types particularly fascinating, but considering what I do for a living, it's not unexpected. I'm not sure exactly from what year you're from, but depending on that, I'm from the Behavioral Analysis Unit or the Behavioral Science Investigative Support Unit. The name changed in 1997 before I was a part of it. You may or may not know about it, since it wasn't considered as important in the nineties and its focus has always been on violent or extremely destructive crime, not on theft.

I may or may not know about it?

[The thought is somehow so charming to her. Nobody ever assumes she doesn't know something — what an utterly novel experience.]

I do keep tabs on the FBI, you know, in a...professional capacity. Confidential files tend to make slightly better reading than an in-flight magazine.

What I mean is that my career revolves around death and psychology, so it makes sense that I would gravitate towards Pychic- and Ghost-types.

That, and Ghost-types have extremely fascinating characteristics, like Litwicks and their evolutions consuming life force or Misdreavus and their evolutions consuming fear or Yamasks being able to possess a person with a mask. I'm interested in learning more about how these things work.

[It's probably for the best that this isn't video, anyway, or she might take it as encouragement to keep teasing him.]

Assuming you were of a mind to continue your career here, during this little vacation from your own world. You might've just as easily done the opposite and gravitated to Grass-types, just for the sake of a change of pace.

But if it's Pokemon characteristics you're interested in, you should play Trivial Pursuit with Zack sometime. He's never one to turn down a willing partner.

[He gives a soft laugh at the mention of Grass-types.] I'll be honest: I don't think I can even imagine myself not doing what I do. I think I'll always gravitate to it.
